| Common Concepts about the Forest |
Forests are a very important measure of the ecological environmental quality of a country. How does one comment on the forests of a country?
There are many indices: the most important one is forest area and coverage. According to the Implementation Details of Forestry Law of the People's Republic of China, issued in 1986, forest area refers to areas of arbor forests, economic forests and bamboo forests with crown densities of over 0.3; bushes ially regulated by the state, farm forests and coverage aside from villages, roads, water and houses.
Crown density refers to the ratio of the area of vertical projection of the tree crown versus the forest area. Forest coverage refers to the percentage of forest area of land in a region, or the whole nation.
The 6th general forest investigation concluded in 2003 shows that China has 175 million hectares of forests with a coverage of 18.21%, which is only 61.52% of the world average, ranking world No.130. Forest area per capita is 0.132 hectares, less than one quarter of the world average, ranking No.134 in the world. Thus, China is still a country lacking in forest resources. |
